When scanning the verses various symbols have been used (the letter e is an example only):
Symbol | Name | Represents |
---|---|---|
ĕ | breve | a lesser stress |
ē | macron | a stronger stress 1 |
~ | tilde | a clipped foot |
° | degree | a pause-foot or metrically timed punctuation |
⸾ | wiggley vertical line | caesura |
| | pipe | the separation of metrical feet |
- An breve or macron over another macron or breve respectively, is also used to represent promoted stress or demoted stress depending on interpretation. Double breves and macrons may also be used to indicate the extension of a vowel sound. When double overlay of breve and macron may not always render as expected on the web page and so an overlay x will be use and appear as eͯ. ↩︎
