Scansion Symbols – xiv lines

When scanning the verses various symbols have been used (the letter e is an example only):

Symbol	Name	Represents
ĕ	breve	a lesser stress
ē	macron	a stronger stress ¹
eͯ	overlay x	a lesser or stronger stress depending on interpretation ²
~	tilde	a clipped foot
°	degree	a pause-foot or metrically timed punctuation
⸾	wiggley vertical line	caesura
ǀ	pipe	the separation of metrical feet

Metrical accent is dependent on the surrounding syllables or feet. This may not always be the same as natural speech stress.

Double breves and macrons may also be used to indicate the extension of a vowel sound. ↩︎
